Former Benue State Governor and senator, Gabriel Suswam, has raised alarm over the worsening state of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that the party might not survive until the 2027 general elections unless urgent action is taken to resolve its internal crisis.

Speaking on Arise Television’s The Morning Show on Tuesday, Suswam said the PDP is currently like a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), indicating a critical condition with only a 50-50 chance of recovery. He cited ongoing conflicts, including the tussle over the national secretary position and the high-profile feud between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as signs of deep-rooted instability.

Suswam stated that many party members are disillusioned and simply waiting for the party’s collapse, noting that the survival of the PDP depends largely on the success of a current reconciliation initiative led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki. According to him, the outcome of Saraki’s intervention will become clear within the next two weeks.

In his words:
“A lot of people are hanging on, waiting to see the ultimate end of this party. Is PDP in the hospital? Yes. Is it in ICU to some extent? Yes, it is. Can it be rescued? Yes, if the proper medicine is applied.”

Suswam stressed that if the Saraki-led effort fails, the party risks complete extinction before the next election cycle. His comments come amid growing concern over the PDP’s ability to remain a viable opposition force, especially after repeated electoral setbacks and internal strife.
