Jonathan Warns Against One-Party State Amid Mass Defections

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has warned that Nigeria risks suffocation, confusion, and possible anarchy if attempts are made to manipulate the political landscape toward a one-party state. Speaking in Abuja during a memorial event for late elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark, Jonathan acknowledged that while a one-party system had worked in countries like Tanzania under Julius Nyerere, such arrangements must emerge through national consensus and systematic processes—not by political manipulation.

Jonathan’s remarks come in response to the recent wave of defections from major opposition parties—PDP, LP, and NNPP—to the ruling APC, which many observers believe could dangerously tip the balance of Nigeria’s democratic framework. He emphasized that while a one-party system is not inherently evil, imposing one through backdoor tactics undermines democracy and national unity.

In an emotional tribute to Clark, whom he described as a father figure, Jonathan praised his courage, intelligence, and unmatched memory, asserting that Clark’s role in Nigeria’s political history is irreplaceable.
