As the country continues to face mounting economic pressures and a skyrocketing cost of living, Nigerian workers found a moment of reprieve and inspiration on May 1st, as they marked International Workers’ Day. Among the many voices that rose in solidarity was that of Lady Grace Ike, Chairperson of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, who took the opportunity to celebrate and commend the tireless efforts of Nigerian journalists.
In a message that resonated across the media landscape, Lady Ike extended warm felicitations to journalists and all Nigerian workers, acknowledging their resilience in the face of ongoing economic adversity. Despite her demanding schedule, she graced the May Day celebration, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with her colleagues and reinforcing her commitment to the journalism profession.
Her participation was more than ceremonial—it was a powerful gesture of solidarity. Observers noted that her presence added considerable weight to the May Day activities, making the event not just a commemoration, but a call for renewed unity and purpose within the journalism community.
“As Governance Today Nigeria magazine continues its tradition of highlighting leadership and promoting good governance,” a spokesperson said, “we are proud to report on leaders who truly exemplify accountability and empathy. Lady Grace Ike is one such leader.”
In her goodwill message to the media community, Lady Ike emphasized the importance of collective strength, unity of purpose, and the critical role journalists play in shaping the nation’s democratic fabric. She praised the perseverance of Nigerian journalists, many of whom continue to work under challenging conditions to ensure that truth and transparency are upheld in society.
“Your participation reinforces our collective strength and shared vision for a better future for journalism in Nigeria. Together, we will continue to make the NUJ FCT Council a shining example of excellence, setting benchmarks for others to emulate,” she stated.
Under her leadership, the NUJ FCT Council has increasingly been recognized for setting high standards in journalistic ethics, advocacy for press freedom, and support for members’ welfare. Her vision for the council, colleagues say, is rooted in inclusive progress and professional integrity.
The May Day event served not only as a celebration of labor but also as a platform to reaffirm the NUJ’s commitment to advancing press freedom and improving the working conditions of media practitioners. With voices like Lady Grace Ike at the helm, many journalists expressed optimism that better days lie ahead.
As Nigeria navigates turbulent economic times, the journalism community continues to look up to leaders who can inspire hope, unity, and progress. On May Day 2025, Lady Grace Ike reminded everyone why leadership that listens, stands with the people, and acts with purpose still matters.
