Senate President Godswill Akpabio has formally denied the sexual harassment allegations made against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. During a Senate plenary session on Wednesday, following a week-long break, Akpabio stated, “At no time did I ever harass any woman. I was raised very well by my late single mother and I have always upheld respect for women.” He highlighted his recognition as the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria.

Akpabio mentioned that he had been receiving inquiries regarding the allegations since February 25 and urged Nigerians and the media to refrain from jumping to conclusions, advising them to await the court’s ruling.

In response to his denial, Akpoti-Uduaghan submitted a petition under Order 40, accusing him of sexual harassment and abuse of office. She requested to officially present her petition to the Senate, which was subsequently referred to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct for further investigation.

The controversy began in February following a seating arrangement dispute between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio, leading to heightened tensions within the Senate. During the session, Akpoti-Uduaghan remained seated and did not stand as Akpabio entered the chamber, breaking the customary display of respect for the presiding officer.
