President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an “extraordinary leader and statesman” in celebration of his 88th birthday. In a heartfelt tribute, Tinubu acknowledged Obasanjo’s vital contributions to Nigeria’s growth, noting that his sometimes controversial interventions in national issues have played a crucial role in shaping public policy and holding leaders accountable.

Tinubu reminisced about Obasanjo’s significant influence during key moments in Nigeria’s history, including his leadership in the Nigerian Civil War and his role in facilitating the transition to civilian governance in 1979. He remarked, “Providence has consistently placed General Obasanjo at the forefront during critical times in Nigeria’s narrative.”

The President highlighted Obasanjo’s return as a civilian president in 1999, after his release from prison, which signified the dawn of a new democratic era. Tinubu also described Obasanjo as an “ambassador of global peace,” recognizing his ongoing impact in both national and international matters, particularly in conflict resolution.

In conclusion, Tinubu expressed his desire for Obasanjo to continue sharing his wisdom and strength, stating, “I pray that God Almighty grants him more years so that the nation and Africa can keep benefiting from his insight and knowledge.”
