Edo Government and PDP Clash Over Escalating Kidnapping and Crime Rates

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the Edo State government, claiming it is more focused on serving its political benefactors than addressing rampant kidnapping and violent crime in the region. In a statement released by Chris Nehikhare, the Publicity Secretary of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, the party described the state as a “safe haven” for criminals, leaving residents in a state of fear.

Nehikhare accused Senator Monday Okpebholo, the Chief Security Officer of the state, of being ineffective in managing the rising insecurity. He highlighted that despite the state receiving N750 million each month for security, these funds are allegedly being squandered on personal interests rather than being used to combat the growing crime wave.

Responding to these allegations, Governor Okpebholo rejected the PDP’s claims as misleading and politically motivated. He argued that such statements aim to deter potential investors and mislead the public about the security situation in Edo State. His spokesperson, Fred Itua, emphasized that the idea of Edo being the “capital of kidnapping” is unfounded and a distortion of reality, pointing to the PDP’s own failures during their time in power.

The governor called on the PDP to recognize the security improvements and economic progress achieved under his administration, suggesting that their criticism stems from their own past shortcomings in governance.

This ongoing dispute underscores the political rivalry in Edo State as both parties seek to sway public opinion amid rising concerns about safety and effective governance.
