Former President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that Nigeria’s electoral inaccuracies stem from the existence of “ghost voters.” He stressed the importance of integrity within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), suggesting that officials should resign rather than give in to pressure for election rigging.

During his address at the YIAGA Africa Reflection Conference on Democratic Elections in West Africa in Abuja, Jonathan highlighted that the ongoing credibility crisis in the electoral system will continue until individuals of strong moral character take charge of INEC. He remarked, “Without credible people, we are in trouble.”

He also criticized the regionalization of the electoral process, claiming it obstructs the election of qualified leaders and promotes biases that weaken democratic practices. Jonathan called for reforms in voter registration and electoral processes, emphasizing that democracy cannot operate effectively without these changes.

He referenced the logistical challenges and violence that affected the 2023 general elections, despite the introduction of technologies like the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System. By comparing Nigeria to nations such as Ghana, which held successful elections, he underscored the need for ethical leadership and robust systems to ensure credible elections.

In conclusion, Jonathan advocated for increased youth involvement and addressing underlying issues such as poverty and inequality to fortify democracy in Africa.
