A non-denominational group, the Christian Conscience, has urged caution and consideration from both the Federal Government and organised labour in their ongoing negotiations over the new minimum wage.
The group’s call comes amid rising tensions and the threat of a nationwide strike by labour unions seeking better wages for workers.
In a press release obtained by GTN, which was jointly signed by its Chairperson, Dr Yetunde Akinluyi, and General Secretary, Dr Kolawole Verrals, the group acknowledged the legitimacy of the labour unions’ demands but emphasised the need for realism and consideration of the country’s fragile economic situation.
“Though the organised labour union is making genuine demands on behalf of workers, but such must be realistic and in tune with our fragile economy.
“Labour unions must realise the multiple effects of inflation that will later affect the common people they are fighting for,” a statement from the National Publicity Secretary, Tunji Oguntuase, noted on Tuesday.
The group urged both parties to approach the negotiations with sincerity, without sentiment, and with wisdom as the guiding principle.
“A sincere government will be mindful of inflation and global effect on how wages are paid in any country, while on the other hand, organised labour unions must be seen to be playing their constitutional role of protecting the welfare of their workers,” the statement added.
Expressing concern for state governments struggling to pay the existing minimum wage, the group cautioned, “We noticed that only the Federal Government and a few state governments in the country can meet their demands if the Labour union insists.”
The group also called on opinion leaders, traditional rulers, and religious leaders to mediate in the deadlock to avoid a nationwide strike that could further exacerbate the country’s fragile economic situation.
“We also call on opinion leaders, traditional rulers and religious leaders to mediate in the deadlock so as to avoid nationwide strike that will further worsen our fragile economy which the Government is striving to bring back on track,” the release stated.
The statement further emphasised the need for wisdom and consideration from all parties involved in the negotiations, urging them to find a balanced solution that addresses workers’ welfare while respecting the country’s economic realities.
