The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has urged Nigerians to comply with the law by filing their annual tax returns on or before March 31, stressing that the obligation applies to both employers and individuals.

Oyedele made the call while speaking during a virtual engagement with human resources managers, payroll officers, chief financial officers, and tax managers, where he expressed concern over widespread non-compliance with tax filing requirements across the country.

He explained that employers are required to file annual returns for their employees, including projections of staff earnings and taxes paid, noting that many organisations are yet to meet the deadline despite having only a few days left.

According to him, individual taxpayers must also file self-assessment returns, warning that compliance levels remain alarmingly low, even in states considered to have advanced tax administration systems.

Oyedele clarified that employees should not assume their tax obligations end once deductions are made from their salaries, stressing that both existing and new tax laws require individuals to personally file returns every year.

He added that efforts are ongoing to simplify the filing process and assured that all income earners, including those on low wages and businesses enjoying tax incentives, are required to disclose their earnings and benefits when submitting their returns.
