The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to move its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) process from Local Government Area offices to wards across Lagos State on a rotational basis. This initiative aims to reduce voter apathy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

During a stakeholders meeting, Lagos Resident Electoral Commissioner Prof. Ayobami Salami emphasized the significance of the CVR exercise as a critical statutory duty of INEC, which allows eligible Nigerians to register, transfer their voter registration, and update their details.

So far, Lagos State has seen a total of 139,251 registrations in the first phase of the CVR, with new registrants making up 126,668 of that total. Notably, 54% of these new registrants are women, while 65% are youths aged between 18 and 39.

The second phase of the CVR, which will last for 50 days from February 2 to April 10, 2026, seeks to build on successes from the first phase. The final week will see registrations return to Local Government Area offices.

Prof. Salami reiterated INEC’s commitment to a credible, inclusive, and transparent registration process and called for cooperation from political parties, civil society organizations, and community leaders to encourage active participation among eligible citizens. The overall goal is to enhance democratic representation and governance in Nigeria.
