At least 43 people have been killed in fresh attacks on communities in Gwer West and Apa Local Government Areas of Benue State. The assaults, which occurred on Sunday evening, follow a previous wave of violence that resulted in over 40 fatalities, including a police officer, just a week prior.

Locals reported that attackers stormed Tse Antswam, a suburb of Naka town in Gwer West LGA, around 7 PM, opening fire indiscriminately and leaving at least 18 dead, with many others wounded. Survivors described scenes of chaos, with villagers fleeing into nearby bushes or jumping into wells to escape the gunfire.

Chief Daniel Abomtse, the traditional ruler of the area, confirmed the death toll and characterized the attacks as guerrilla-style. He noted that 18 bodies had been recovered, with some victims severely injured and in critical condition.

In a simultaneous attack in Apa LGA, gunmen invaded the Edikwu Ankpali community, resulting in over 25 deaths. A resident, identified as Tony, reported that burial arrangements are already underway for some of the victims.

Additionally, former government official John Ikwulono indicated that the Opaha community was also attacked early Monday morning, with casualties yet to be confirmed. He mentioned that residents are trapped in Odugbo, unable to flee.

Local government officials expressed deep frustration over the ongoing violence. Victor Ormini, Chairman of Gwer West LGA, lamented that the situation continues to worsen, while Adams Ocheiga, Chairman of Apa LGA, confirmed the attacks and stated he was heading to the affected areas for an assessment.

The Benue State Police Command’s new spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the incidents but did not provide specific casualty figures. She stated that tactical teams have been deployed to the affected areas and promised to provide accurate figures once more information is available.
