The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed speculation that President Bola Tinubu may sideline Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, the party’s National Vice Chairman (South-East), called the rumors a distraction, emphasizing the solid working relationship between Tinubu and Shettima. He stated that Shettima is a valuable asset, focused and deeply involved in the administration.
The speculation arose after 22 APC governors and party leaders endorsed Tinubu as the sole presidential candidate for 2027. This endorsement was supported by key figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
Critics, including former APC presidential aspirant Charles Udeogaranya, condemned the move, warning that bypassing competitive primaries could deprive other aspirants of leadership opportunities.
Meanwhile, discontent in the North Central region has fueled discussions about potential changes in the ticket to accommodate regional demands. A delegation from the North-Central Renaissance Movement has been pushing for greater representation in future elections.
Despite the speculation, APC officials have reiterated that there is no official indication of a change in the current ticket, with Deputy National Organising Secretary Chidi Duru stating it remains the President’s prerogative.
