Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Vice Presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 election, has officially announced his intention to run for the presidency in 2027. This declaration took place during a rally at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

Baba-Ahmed’s announcement follows former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi’s recent departure from the party to join the African Democratic Congress, leading to speculation about the Labour Party’s future. However, Baba-Ahmed asserted that his political ambitions were independent of Obi’s decisions, stating, “I’m not following anybody’s trajectory.”

He emphasized that his aspiration for the presidency predates the 2023 election and recalled his earlier attempts to secure a party ticket. Baba-Ahmed asserted the constitutional right of every qualified Nigerian, regardless of religion or ethnicity, to contest for political office.

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, praised Baba-Ahmed for his commitment to the party, noting that key figures, including the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, have chosen to remain with the Labour Party.

Baba-Ahmed’s declaration marks a significant development in the run-up to the 2027 elections, as parties navigate realignments within the opposition.
